WHA70 approves policies on NCD and Childhood Obesity

The World Health Assembly (WHA) held its 70th Session from 22 to 31 May in Geneva and approved very relevant policy options and interventions for the food and beverages sector.

On the one hand, the WHA approved a Resolution to endorse the updated Appendix 3 to the action plan for the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases (NCD) 2013-2020 in preparation for the Third High-Level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases, to be held in 2018. Appendix 3 includes 16 interventions including measures such as taxation of sugary drinks and reformulation of foodstuffs to reduce their salt content.

On the other, the WHA approved a Decision to welcome the implementation plan of the Report of the Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity. This plan proposes: to encourage children from very young age to choose healthy habits regarding food and physical activity; and measures such as taxation and setting marketing and labelling standards to food and beverages, particularly concerning educational environments.
